Second-Term Limit 2 Years, 8 Months ago

Can anybody elaborate on the pros and cons for this principle? I heard the concern is related to the erosion of performance in a president's consecutive terms.
It seems common-sensical that good, much less great, leaders are hard sought. Having found one, it is a pity that he should be removed no later than 8 years of office. Suppose people like Thatcher was removed after 8 years, I wonder if it wasn't a great loss to UK. Well, it's problematic then, if there's a competent successor, and it's not easy to replace him. But if the election is held every 4 years, it sounds like it wouldn't be too much of a fuss.
I would like to hear your opinions.

The reason often stated for the limit
is the accumulation of too much power, due to
the President's role in making appointments....
..the tipping of balance in the checks-n-balances.
Performance is a rather hard thing
to evaluate objectively.

Is it a bad thing should there be a chance for someone to be a president for his lifetime? It's not as if the voting would stop. It's different from a monarch or an autocrat who leads the country for his whole life. Indeed, FDR is one example where it seems better that there was no limit to the number of terms a man can serve as the president.

One doesn't have to look far for examples of a ruling party
using the instruments of state to help keep it in power.
The US system of 'checks and balances' acknowledges that any
branch of government is susceptible. Even the governmental system
of the USSR was set up with a distrust of ultimate power, with the
party, the military, and the intelligence wings maneuvering and
purging on and on. The executive seat carries
the most concentrated power. It has become almost imperial at times.
