Corporate Persons 2 Years, 4 Months ago

Since corporations are now œpersons, the obvious question remains: œwhat is a person? This is philosophy 101, The Dialogues of Plato, may Socrates forgive the Supreme Court for not defining their terms, thus knowing what they are talking about. Mary Anne Warren gave it shot, but her counterfactual arguments of conscious would include animals. œPersonhood remains undefined and incoherent. For starters, it is self-evident that a person is a human being. It follows that The Supreme Court believes that coorporations are human beings; if so, the burden is upon them to prove it. So what is a œperson? They need philosophical help.

a legal definition is not (necessarily) a metaphysical one.

Persons are (generally supposed to be) unified subjects.

A corporation has a unified voice, qua corporation. There is never (or rarely) doubt as to what a corporation says or has said to it in courts of law, the IRS, etc. There is presumably a chain of command that makes this unambiguous.
Edit: As there is with us. The mouth speaks for the body. Or the hand as it scribbles.

The connection is: ethical.
Whatever the law says is derived from
human decisions that make a corporation
do things to other humans. Some vehicle
of consideration must be used. Otherwise
there is no responsibility, except return
on investment.
