To expand a bit Nanrek. Pantheism implies just one entity, and has existential dimensions. In fact, i think it is logically impossible that anything created could be a pantheistic entity.

Greetings Motorcyclist! There are many fabricated things that exceed natural selection, e.g., airplanes vis a vis birds. I can envision the creation of finite self-sufficient and self-aware universes that operate as a single organism, e.g., creating a fancy AI machine that simulates itself as a self-aware universe.

I was a little unclear. Let me make the case differently. I'm with you until you make the case for cosmic evolution that could be construed as pantheism. I think that qualitative leap into the existential realm is problematic. Yes, airplanes are faster than birds, but AI is not divine. In the sense, I would maintain, that existence precedes essence. There are two Western philosophers that come to mind. First, John Locke, which is a weaker strain, in epistemological terms, where the mind is a blank slate, and knowledge is derived from sensory experience. The more notable example is of course Sartre, who explictly makes the case that existence precedes essence.

So...yes, I can see AI directing evolution, but not creating itself as a truly self aware organism. I think you cross the metaphysical rubicon in that case.

I'm not fluent with Whitehead's views, but an interesting comparison might be your conception of evolution or self direction vs. his notion of becoming, or the unfolding of events as building blocks of reality.

So Nanrek...would it be fair, then, to assume you are a materialist? In an ironic way are you not making a mechanistic case?

The answer could be yes, by you

But that would probably just make a good science fiction story that goes like this:
I created this universe and all of its laws because as the higher power me living in a realm beyond it, I was bored. Everyone else just co-exists in my universe. The reason I made time and mystery was part of the fun!
