I was wondering if anyone could point me to where (as in in what text/chapter) Kant's distinction between public and private uses of reason lies.

Oh cool! I'm doing a piece on Foucault's "What is Enlightenment?" and hadn't gotten the chance to go all the way through Kant's "What is Enlightenment?" yet to know if that was in there or not; that is to say, I am thrilled that I don't have to plow through one of Kant's Critiques in a span of a couple days.

I think the public and private are bridged very early on,
in the derivation of the Categorical Imperative. The key term
is "Good Will" . That is the building block that makes individuals
into a proper society, a justification.
(in "Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals")
After that, the public doesn't really take a direct role.
That's kind of the point...Kant is shooting for a sort of
context-free determination of what is morally right
most of the time, so as not to let all the details of society
cloud things. The way the Categorical Imperative is
burnt clean of complications seems very similar to
Descarte's derivation of the cogito in the attempt at purity.

So the upshot, is, I guess, that since Kant deliberately focuses
on the individual almost from the start, the public
(more directly 'ethical') aspect is always secondary after the
first connection. I spent a lot more time on early Kant, so
someone may be able to talk about a revisiting, but direct public
considerations are almost ruled out by design early on.
