An interesting topic. I am not sure if I agree with how you frame the 'essence' of art, however I am certainly interested in the idea of 'life' being 'art'.
I recommend Alexander Nehamas' The Art of Living: Socratic Reflections from Plato to Foucault

thanks a lot for the reference. i will certainly look up Nehamas' work
P.S. i encourage more people out there to think about this and offer a response ^.^ I would really like to know how you feel.

I guess we can describe human actions as "art" if we agree that the outcome of this artistic expression can range from great to shitty.

Well, it seems obvious that the outcome is derivative from the "brush strokes" if you will. But, what may seem "shitty" to one, another may find beauty, truth, and/or greatness in it. Art is relative, don't you agree?

You say:
[quote1197784921=TheBlindMan]
Art is relative, don't you agree?
[/quote1197784921]
And then:
[quote1197784900=TheBlindMan]
So, I've come to the conclusion that life, in its entirety, IS art. [/quote1197784900]
So, which is it?
