Hi!
I am joining everyone else on this website in the quest to make some sense of life and the world by continuing my efforts to make sense of music. My main struggle has been trying to determine why I respond to certain chord progressions mroe strongly than to others. One explanation I received was that the particular progressions deviate from what I would normally expect under conventional harmony, and this seems to be a plausible explanation.
However, I can't help but think that these reactions might be caused by some kind of quality inherent in me; that the reactions are subjective to me, and not based on any property of the tones themselves. I am still puzzled as to where I stand on this, because as with many philosophical arguments, many of them sound good and make sense, but I don't know which is the one for me.
What do you think? Is the way you respond to the various elements of music (not just the musical experience as a whole) tailor-made to you and only you? If so, how so?
