I take humean's usage of 'true nature of reality' is pointing to the transcendent, in which case we can't know it.
But are questions of the beautiful EVER about the transcendent? If they are, then I think there is some confusion about what is important about beauty.

I'm glad to see that discussion picked up again. Yes, I meant truth in a transcendent sense, in the sense of obtaining an objective view of the world. I think the desire to do this is something human beings share. We are doomed to fail in this because we are part of the world itself and cannot get outside it. So, to compensate for this, we create narratives, pictures, poems, and world-views, which are very meaningful--in fact, they may be more meaningful to us than ideas that we are fairly certain reflect the true state of affairs ("knowledge").
I may be departing from what Friedrich had in mind. I admit to struggling mightily with his texts.
