[poll] the effect of music upon the body 4 Years, 2 Months ago

Just listening to Erik Saties Nocturne 3 i realised that i have never questioned why every time i hear a great piece of music i get a tingle up my spine. Does anyone know the physiological reason behind this? or can anyone direct me to a certain person or essay?

I'd recommend Daniel Levitin's This Is Your Brain on Music for a good overview of the cognitive neuroscience of music. That tingling sensation is the effects of endogenous opioids being released. The "runner's high" that some people feel when exercising is also caused by opioid release. Drugs, sex, and other thing which give us pleasure also cause this sensation.
In short: The reason it occurs when listening to music is not fully understood though it is believed to involve neural mechanisms that anticipate future musical sequences based off of prior ones and for whatever reason the brain offers itself a reward for correctly anticipating novel musical passages.
