To say that a work of art is good, but incomprehensible to the majority of men, is the same as saying of some kind of food that it is very good but that most people can't eat it -- Leo Tolstoy

This is an astute analysis; an excerpt: The American right wing is achieving its long-term goal of becoming the nations thought police. They are realizing this goal through the timeless practices of extremists...which are intimidation, slander and harassment. In the...

Posting on behalf of Janusz Salamon. I will be at this conference. Hope to see many of you in Krakow! CALL FOR PAPERS International Conference in Philosophy of Religion: "Philosophy of Religion in the 21st Century" 27-29 June 2011 - Krakow, Poland Organizers: The conference is organized under the auspices of the European Journal for Philosophy of Religion in cooperation with the Jagiellonian University of Krakow, the Society of Christian Philosophers (USA), the Polish Society for Philosophy of Religion, and the Central European Society for Philosophy of Religion. The focus of the conference will be any issues that from todays perspective seem likely to dominate the debate of philosophers of religion in the decades to come. While the majority of the participants in the conference will be practitioners of analytic philosophy of religion, speakers are invited to consider the meta-philosophical question whether "an exchange between representatives of various traditions within contemporary philosophy of religion" (a phrase taken from the mission statement of the European Journal for Philosophy of Religion) might positively shape the future of the philosophy of religion in the course of the 21st C, and therefore should be encouraged. Keynote Speakers: Eleonore Stump, Linda Zagzebski, Richard Swinburne, William...

  • Cado : Five day moment of silence. I figured I would have had to learn how to write and express my thoughts through typing before I was missed on here. It seems my ignorance is worthy after all ;)
  • Msafwan : No silence for you. No silence death without an honor! Kaplah!! (waaargh!)
  • JK713 : Moment of silence anyone?
  • Cado : Now I remember why I left school. There is no heart here. It was fun, wake up, and sorry for any negative emotions you might have felt. Peace!
  • JK713 : philosophy: Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods
  • Cado : Are there any Stoics here? Are there any who believe in altruism in ethics? Are there any at all who are truly virtuous? It seems so far that everyone talks, and through there words it becomes known that they do not actualy DO philosophy unless they believe doing philosophy is simply thinking logicaly and talking. But what of true philosophical action, what we now call applied philosophy?
  • JK713 : This site is always cyclical in nature. Now that I'm back things will pick up again.
  • funkgunk : 'I think this site has died - at least for the time-being' would seem so
  • Msafwan : No it is not. It is alive, it is alive! ngehahaha!
  • Sam26 : I think this site has died - at least for the time-being
  • Sam26 : No
  • yanshien : Anyone here?
  • yanshien : 有没有使用汉语的人?
  • Szavieur : This chat box reminds me of the dead in the dark world in the last "His Dark Materials" novel.
  • Spar : Anyone here?
  • Szavieur : A lot of 'em've left us. :(
  • Sam26 : I haven't seen Td around - has he left us?
  • Sam26 : You know, you could be right
  • JK713 : Perhaps you had solved it in between your statement, and my asking if you had. It's not my fault you're not very efficient.
  • Sam26 : If I solved it, then it wouldn't be a quandary
  • JK713 : Well have you solved it then?
  • Sam26 : My life is a philosophical quandary
  • JK713 : So.. anyone solve any philosophical quandries lately?
  • Garbangw : «link» «link» «link» «link» «link»
  • Szavieur : Well, I feel at home on Earth (sort of), but I also constantly feel this strange feeling. I do have a theory about the meaning of these emotions but that's for my thread more than this chat box... I don't know how to connect this up with your scientist example, though.
